First Training Sessions of the Culinary Life Skills at QTSCD for the hearing impaired children
After weeks of preparation, the first training of the Culinary Life Skills Program took place last week ! Managed by the Community Development Fund team and Chef Robert Danhi, this initiative represents a significant step toward empowering individuals through cooking and fostering inclusive learning opportunities for all.
Building the Foundation: A Functional Learning Space
Thanks to the incredible generosity of our donors, we’ve completely transformed a classroom into a fully equipped culinary training space. This included installing movable tables for greater flexibility and a camera system that broadcasts the teacher’s hands onto a screen, ensuring every student can clearly see each technique. In addition, we’ve outfitted the classroom with new kitchen tools for every child, giving them their own equipment to use during the sessions. This hands-on approach allows students to practice and learn with confidence.
First Training Sessions in Action
The first sessions were designed to equip teachers with the skills and confidence they need to deliver culinary lessons. During the training, teachers practiced essential kitchen skills, such as making boiled eggs, learning kitchen and knife safety, operating electric devices, and reflecting on lesson delivery techniques.
To simulate a “real-life” classroom setting, children were invited to join as participants, creating an authentic environment where teachers could apply their newly learned skills. This approach brought energy and excitement to the training sessions, allowing teachers to practice managing a classroom while teaching vital culinary skills. Besides, the teachers also learnt how to guide the students through basic gardening skills.
A Community Effort
This program would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our community, partners, and donors. Your contributions have enabled us to create a welcoming and functional space where hearing impaired students can develop valuable skills while feeling safe, supported and included.
What’s Next?
The Culinary Life Skills Program is just beginning!
We look forward to officially celebrating this initiative with our donors and all the students families at the opening ceremony on January 17th.
