The winds of change are blowing through the remote hills of Dakrong district, Quang Tri province, bringing with them the promise of stability and hope. For Ho Thi Lang, a mother of three from the Van Kieu ethnic minority in Cup Village, Huc Nghi Commune, that change has manifested in the solid walls and sturdy roof of her brand-new home.
For years, Ms. Lang and her family of five lived in a dwelling that offered little protection from the elements. But thanks to a collaborative effort between the Hanoi Youth for Community Service (HYCS) and the local government, their lives have been transformed.
In mid-February 2025, construction began on a modest yet significant 7m by 9m house for Ms. Lang's family. The total cost of 70 million VND was made possible through a generous contribution of 50 million VND from HYCS, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of communities in need, and an additional 20 million VND from the local government.
But this wasn't just a handout. Ms. Lang and her husband actively participated in the construction process, contributing their valuable labor. Drawing on their deep connection to the land, they also provided timber they had responsibly collected from the local woods, further reducing the financial burden. This spirit of self-reliance and community involvement is a testament to the resilience of the Van Kieu people.
By mid-June 2025, the dream became a reality. Ms. Lang and her family moved into their new home – a safe and secure space where their children can grow and thrive. This new dwelling offers not just shelter, but also dignity and a renewed sense of hope for the future.
Ms. Lang's story is not an isolated one. This year, under the dedicated funding of HYCS, 14 new houses like hers are being built in Dakrong district. This vital initiative will benefit a total of 70 individuals from ethnic minority communities, providing them with the foundation for a more stable and prosperous life.
This project in Dakrong district highlights the powerful impact of collaborative efforts. The financial support from HYCS, the commitment of the local government, and the active participation of families like Ms. Lang's demonstrate how collective action can bring about tangible and lasting change in the lives of vulnerable communities.
As the rainy season approaches Quang Tri, Ms. Lang and her family can now face the storms with a sense of security they haven't known before. Their new home is more than just bricks and mortar; it's a symbol of hope, resilience, and the unwavering spirit of a community working together for a brighter future. The smiles on the faces of Ms. Lang and her children are a powerful reminder of the profound difference a safe and stable home can make. This initiative by HYCS serves as an inspiring example of how youth engagement and community service can create meaningful and lasting impact in the lives of those who need it most.
